ST PAUL’S ANGLICAN CHURCH: REFLECTIONS FOR LENT 2024

Dear church family.

The service this week comes 40 days after the birth of Christ, and the infant Jesus is presented by her parents to the temple as that was the tradition. By doing so, Mary, his mother, would be cleansed according to the tradition. The Christ babe, being the firstborn child, is offered to the service of God in the temple and is joyfully received by the ageing Anna and Simeon. Songs of celebration are sung, and Simeon declares that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah and the light to the nations. In the fourth Gospel, Jesus fulfilled the prophecy of Simeon by declaring: “I am the light of the world that came to dispel darkness.” (John 8:12). Since the 4th Century AD, the church has observed this special moment, and it is celebrated with the lighting of candles. This is also known as Candlemas. Christians hold candles that are lit to remind ourselves that we are the light of Christ in the world. The same tradition also reminds us of the sanctity or holiness of places of Christian worship, including our church. Let it be our joy to join the Church across the world in bearing the light of Christ, especially in places where war, conflict, fear, poverty, disease, discrimination, hatred, and social and economic injustice are a lived reality. Each time you do your private prayers for yourself, your family, or someone you know is experiencing challenges, you may light your candle. May the light of Christ continue to shine!
